Summer Enrichment Program Intern Description

This position will be based in DC and will be expected to be in the office 3 days per week. Reporting to the Executive Director, LeadingAge DC & Director, Global Aging Network

Position Summary:

The LeadingAge Summer Enrichment Program is a 10-week immersive internship for students who are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs. LeadingAge DC and the Global Ageing Network have an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in aged care issues to join as part of the Summer Enrichment Program Intern in the Washington, DC office. We are looking for an individual to assist with a variety of different tasks.

About the Global Ageing Network

The Global Ageing Network is an international network of leaders in ageing services, housing, research, technology, and design. We bring together experts from around the world, lead education initiatives and provide a place for innovative ideas in senior care to be born. We pay the way to improve best practices in aged care so that older people everywhere can live healthier, stronger, more independent lives.

Focus of the Internship?

  • To shape, develop and mentor a diverse workforce bound for leadership roles.
  • To exposing future talent to the field of aging.
  • To provide additional skills to prepare students to enter the job market, including presentations, and a performance evaluation to further enhance their experience.

What you need to know?

  • A preceptor (supervisor) will provide guidance to the intern and meet with the intern weekly and as needed.
  • A summer project(s) will be designed by the preceptor, with assistance from the intern, that will provide a learning opportunity for the student while benefiting the organization and culminating with a special project presentation to key leaders.
  • The intern will be exposed to high-level executives and the decision-making process within the organization. This will include:
  1. A meeting with President/CEO and intern (virtual or otherwise)
  2. Attendance/participation in department, staff, and board meetings
  3. Mentoring opportunities with key leaders within the organization
  • The intern will be provided access to a workspace and an intern on-boarding.
  • The intern and preceptor will attend virtual LeadingAge Summer Enrichment Program events including:
  1. Summer Enrichment Program - Networking event for Interns
  2. Summer Enrichment Program - Networking event for Preceptors
  • A formal performance feedback upon completion of the internship
  • Models LeadingAge’s core values and behaviors.
  • Committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive community where all are able to meaningfully contribute and thrive

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop posts for online communication sites across all social media platforms.
  • Assist with website administration and post content for the newsletters.
  • Synthesize literature digests and relevant aged care news items.
  • Assist with planning activities to generate online activity and help develop content for our newsletter.
  • Assist in the development and promotion of both LeadingAge DC and Global Ageing Network events and activities.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required:

  • At minimum, entering your junior year of undergraduate study, or graduate-level study, in the Fall following the internship program
  • Works effectively and diplomatically with a variety of publics, including residents, board members, community groups, government agencies, etc.
  • They should have strong research, writing and communication skills.
  • The intern will have a strong attention to detail and be task & detail oriented.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Highly motivated and creative.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Familiarity and use with social media on a regular basis.
  • Experience with or passion for global ageing and aging services.

  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Normal work requires frequent use telephone and computer (monitor, keyboard, mouse).
  • May be required to move about frequently in the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, attend meetings, etc.
  • May require standing/sitting for prolonged periods of time during meetings and conferences.
