The Embassy of Australia in Washington, DC is recruiting for paid internship positions for a duration of ten weeks, between 3 June and 9 August 2024. 


The Embassy is one of seven Australian government posts in the United States and represents Australia’s broader interests in the Americas. The interns will work within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The role of DFAT is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program, and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. DFAT works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests. 


About the Position 


The Congressional Liaison Office is a team responsible for the strategic management of the Embassy’s engagement with the US Congress and for monitoring, analysing and providing advice on US political developments of interest to Australia. 

Interns will perform a range of duties, including:

•  assisting with research and projects related to US elections and political developments, domestic and foreign/trade policy and congressional activities of relevance to Australia including but not limited to, foreign and trade policy

•  performing general administrative duties, including database use

•  assisting with the Embassy’s outreach to Congress.


This position is not eligible for remote/telework. 


The Embassy will work with interns and universities to ensure course credit can be applied where applicable. 


Funding assistance 

Interns receive a rate of pay of $17.50 per hour. Interns are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and health insurance arrangements. 


Obligatory requirements 

To be an eligible applicant, you must:

• be either a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder)

• be in the DMV region for the complete duration of the ten-week program 

• be willing to undergo a pre-employment check including mandatory police check 

• be a student or recently graduated in the past year

• have completed a minimum of two years of tertiary education.
